Hello lovelies … how are you all doing? The holiday season has arrived … Holiday parties, get-togethers with friends and family, treats lying around the office and the like! How does one stay on track during the holidays and not gain a ton of weight?? Having lost a bunch of weight over the course of 2013, the last thing I want is to gain any of it back over the holidays! What’s a girl (or guy) to do? Be prepared!!! Being prepared and having a plan is the best way to ensure you don’t go overboard over the holidays (or anytime for that matter!). The following are some tips and tricks that I have found helpful to keeping me on the right track!

 

How to stay on track during the holidays - the grinchParties – Foods you don’t eat often or even never tried before tempt your taste buds! 5 course meals, hors d’oeuvres, baked goodies, alcohol… At the office – candy bowls, boxes of chocolates, baked treats … everywhere you turn there is someone wanting to share some goodies with you. Family Christmas dinner – Auntie Betty’s stuffing, Lolo’s amazing sweets, Lesley’s rice and beans… the list goes on and on! The smell of your favourite family recipes stir up feelings of nostalgia and make your mouth water!   Sharing food with family, friends and co-workers is an age-old tradition. If you are watching your weight or following a healthy lifestyle, this tradition can wreak havoc on your efforts! The first thing you need to do is have a plan! For example, if you know you have an event on Friday, keep an eye on your intake for a few days beforehand. You shouldn’t have to deprive yourself in life, life is about living and enjoying yourself! Choose your treats wisely, be selective and ask yourself… is this worth the splurge? Enjoy things in moderation and be prepared!

 

 
Smoothies are a great way to get all your nutrients in without breaking the calorie bank! The day of your special event, have a smoothie for breakfast and lunch. All you need is a good blender and your imagination! Just add the  ingredients to your blender starting with the liquids and soft items. Harder items should be added last as it makes it easier for your blender to break everything down. If you feel your smoothie is too thick, add more liquid. Smoothies can keep in the fridge for a few days so don’t worry about making too much. Bring a salad or veggie dish! Contribute to your get-together and bring a favourite snack, that way, you can always ensure to have a healthy choice on hand! Get creative with your veggies… build an eye-catching veggie platter with a side of hummus for dipping! Chickpeas are rich in protein which helps you feel fuller faster.

Cut back on alcohol consumption. Calorically speaking, a glass of wine will not do you much harm (about 100 calories per glass) but eggnog, beer and mixed drinks can really pack on the calories! Choose your alcohol wisely and limit yourself to a glass or two… you’ll also avoid feeling tipsy, making bad food choices you’ll regret the next day and the dreaded hangover!

Don’t forget to exercise. Skipping a gym session here or there is perfectly normal. We all lead hectic lives and during the holiday season things get even crazier! Heading to the gym can take up a lot of your precious holiday time. Getting dressed, heading out to the gym, getting in a good workout and heading back home can easily take two hours! So, there you have it. A few easy tricks to keep yourself on track over the holidays! I hope you have found this post helpful! If you do happen to fall off track and gain a pound or two, don’t fret, it’s the holidays!! Just get back on track and keep reaching for your goal. Just make sure you don’t gain more than a few pounds, once you gain 5-10 lbs things get much harder to realign!
