It’s only a few weeks into 2012 and we are already starting to see a shift in fashion trends! All that’s old is new again as we see items from the past re-vamped for today.
Here’s what 2012 has in store for your style
There is a prominent revival of the 20s this year with flapper motifs, lace, long silhouettes, femininity, and wavy hairstyles lined with a darker more mysterious edge. The influence was felt everywhere from the 2012 Golden Globes to the latest Mercedes Benz shoot featuring the new 2013 SL Roadster (heavily influenced by legendary classic cars of the 50s) alongside Lara Stone who looks like she was pulled out of a Film Noir!
I’ve also spotted the revival of the French Twist and the Beehive’s half bouffant hairstyle made famous by Brigitte Bardot way before Snooki and Amy Winehouse’s time!
In shoes we have Kitten-heels. This is halfway between flats and high heels. They’re a small slender heel of about 2 inches. Slightly different from a stiletto, the heel usually curves inwards from the back of the heel giving the shoe a bit more stability than a stiletto. Kitten heels are like the ugly step-sister of the heel family; they don’t lengthen the leg nor define the calf yet it was a major trend of 2011 and is expected to continue into 2012. I kinda like them myself… much easier to walk and dance in!
Another feature spotted in most designer collections was the simpleton approach to fashion – think folk-ish meets minimal. I’ve seen countless pieces made out of lace/Crochet, especially structured heavier lace pieces; Peter-pan collars; ultra-short hemlines with low-slung belts; monochromatic pallets with plenty of white, cream and black; plus effortless unfussy hair and winged-out eyeliner (my favorite!).
If the revival of the 20s wasn’t enough for you, it seems that the reinvention of the trends of the 60s is also a likely flavour for 2012. Prints and bold colours were featured in Spring’s Ready-To-Wear shows across the fashion capitals of the world with cuts that draw in the waist; accentuating the bust and hips… it’s all about the curves! Full circle and slim pencil skirts, cropped pants with high waists, a sultry pout, long lashes and plenty of eyeliner … think Marilyn Monroe eyes that seem to want to close on their own from the weight of the eyeliner!!
